Pride month has been over for a little while now and the rainbow corporate logos go away for another year. But of course, queers are for life, not just for June. So we’re out here celebrating again, chatting to Rob Madge, the mastermind behind My Son’s a Queer; (but what can you do?) at the Belgrade.
I spent last Saturday with my gorgeous friend and some new, incredible women doing an empowerment workshop, followed by a bite to eat and a fierce feminist play.

I am sure you’ll have all heard of it – The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a heartwarming and charming story based on a group of British retirees ending up in an entirely unexpected hotel-come-retirement-home in India. I caught it this summer at the Belgrade while on its tour and here are my thoughts!

As a British kid, I bet you likely read Lord of the Flies in school. Of course, when I was younger, I didn’t really understand it – why were the kids so chaotic? Why would they do the things they did? After seeing the play, it got me so gripped that after innumerable years since I’ve read the novel… I FINALLY GOT IT.
The Belgrade invited me to see Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead this week and I was immediately intrigued.
Never more poignant than in the current economic climate, as entrenched class structures continue to ensure that people who are poor, stay poor; Blood Brothers is absolutely one to watch this year.

It’s really difficult to adapt films to the stage when the way in which a story is told really benefits from a cinematic edge. Some things you just can’t do with a full stage performance – there are certain ways that a close-up of a sideways glance, set design and ‘show and don’t tell’ narration can create more palpable tension in film…

Once again an astounding show is put on at the Belgrade Theatre as we launch into their Spring schedule. Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of) is not to be missed.

There’s something incredibly British about pantomime that I adore. There’s nothing else quite like it anywhere in the world (to my knowledge). There’s also no better traditional panto than the one at the Belgrade. This year was Jack and the Beanstalk – a classic, of course.
