My Summer Wishlist: Waves, Caves and Quaint Cottages

I often lose track of what’s important in my busy daily life – something we can all be guilty of. I hyper-focus on things which are meaningless, fill my life with STUFF and don’t spend enough time looking at the world around me with intrigue. So, this year my Summer Wishlist is a pretty short one…

Some people never fail to have this curiosity. They find the beauty in things, no matter how mundane things may seem to others; they can find the joy and wonder in the strangest of things and bring out the comedy in the tiniest of details.

“Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.” – Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time

We’re going on an Adventure

Last weekend I visited places that I’d been to numerous times before during my childhood; Burnham-on-sea and Cheddar Gorge (Somerset). It was so familiar to me that I knew where to eat, I remembered the walks, the position of the shops, the commentaries in the caves… it were as if it were my own hometown.

But for all the times I’ve been there, this time was different. It was like I was seeing everything for the first time; surrounded by normality but somehow venturing into a world that we entirely made our own. It wasn’t an exotic new country, (in fact it was quite rainy) but it could have been anywhere in the world and I’d have still felt the same wholehearted happiness.

I’ve always been searching for something new, in the wrong places. Absorbed by my phone and internet instead of things happening in the room, and always looking for the latest things to buy and fill the few empty spaces left in my cluttered house. But now I don’t even notice the time flying by and probably for the first time since I was a teenager, I didn’t give a second thought to my phone.

Anywhere with Shane feels like we could make a million stories from the small things we see and share them with one another. A simple holiday in a cottage brought me so much happiness – I could be anywhere in the world and I’d have felt the same. He sees the beauty and the comedy in the smallest things, and we whiled away the hours, wandering aimlessly.

That’s why this Summer Wishlist is just one line long: The sea, sand and this one guy, holding my hand.
