A Geek’s Guide: Try these 6 Geeky Isolation Activities

Self-isolation is tough as hell! So I thought I’d give you all just a few geeky isolation activities to get you through the gloom! If you’ve got any of your own, comment them below…

1) Make a jar of Geeky future gatherings

At first it might seem like it’s going to be forever until we can all get out and about again. Maybe you miss going to conventions, or meeting friends for board game nights… When those little longings come up, rather than feeling sad and letting them pass by, turn them into a future plan. Take the time to make the pictures pretty as the colouring can be quite therapeutic!

2) Send your best nerds some geeky gifts

Often I find the little gifts from nowhere for no reason are much more significant than gifts for occasions. Now, more than ever, I know we all could do with a little surprise. Shout out to Present Indicative and GeekyClean for being my current gift providers of choice! I’ve done a few gift guides if you’d like some ideas…

3) Attend a Geeky Online Gathering

With tools like Roll20 and Discord, there are so many ways you can connect with your nerd pals from the comfort of your own home. Why not move your D&D group online or start playing Escape Rooms online together… Last weekend, Coventry Geeks ran a Nerd Quiz on our Coventry Geeks Discord server and it was a mega success! Here’s a link to our questions if you want to give it a go!

For now, if there’s anyone who is not in the Coventry area that is feeling isolated, join our server if you would like to meet some like-minded geeks. Since we’re all online now, you can attend our events no matter where in the world you’re from – all nerds welcome.

4) Crack out the Board Games… Online!

You know all those times that you’ve put off opening those board games? There’s no excuse now! Why not host an online session of your favourite games – all you need is one person to own the game with a camera in position and you can all play online. Some (epic) games creators have even created online versions of their popular games like Exploding Kittens.

5) Try out some Geeky Crafts

Crafting doesn’t have to be all pictures of fluffy kittens – applying your love of nerdery to something creative can give you another outlet. Why not try your hand at creating Comic Book Flowers, or Retro Games Cross-stitch?

There are so many crafters out there you can find and take inspiration from including the lovely Bright Lights Stitch Co. (not a current sponsor, she’s just great.) There are also tons of Pokemon themed crafts, including these awesome Pokemandalas I’ve been colouring. I’ve even seen people hosting online crafting conference calls to get chatting while they create.

6) Create and Wear your Cosplays

Of course, all the cons are cancelled but that doesn’t mean that you can’t dress up anyway! Everyone needs a test run. In the same way as putting your make-up on can make you feel a little better, getting out the old face paints and getting into costume for a while can be just the thing you need to escape. I’ve done this many times just for no reason.

Bonus: Remember You’re Human

Calling myself out for being SO bad at this, but it’s important to look after yourself on a most basic human level. My first most simple advice: Hydrate yourself, Eat Well, Keep a Routine, Step Outside, Sleep Well if you can. Looking after your needs is the most important thing during this time and always.

I think actually, those of us who are used to having indoor hobbies… video games, model painting, building forts entirely out of Lego, burying our noses in books… are the ones who will be most able to deal with keeping busy and escaping reality for a while. It’s what us nerds were made for! It’s out time to shine! Take care of yourself, everyone.

I really love this post, from the felt gifts to the crafting! Definitely will be doing the Pokemandalas and trying to remember that I’m (unfortunately!) only human. Great blog! 🙂

Great list! I’m lucky enough to live with a lovely wife and a HEAP of board games.

That being said, I’m going to be running D&D adventure by remote for my elf obsessed neice soon!

I’ve definitely been doing lots of these on here!

I’ve been playing D&D online with friends through Roll 20, Animal Crossing cross stitch, playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons and more! 😀
